FLICKERING LIGHTS: AN ANNOYING PROBLEM THAT POSES A BIG RISK

Lights that flicker, whether intermittently or constantly, are a sign of electrical problems. Although the problem could be with the fixture, it is likely an issue with the main system if more than one light is affected. Read on to learn more about this electrical issue.

Safety Risks

Although a flickering light can be a nuisance, the main concern is safety. A flickering light could be an indication of a dangerous flaw within the system.

FIRE

Fluctuations of power in your electrical system can lead to shorts and sparks, which in turn is a common cause of house fires. These fires may not originate out in the open, or even near the flickering light fixture, as the main cause could be in the wiring in the walls or at the main circuit control box.

SHOCK

Even if fire isn’t an immediate risk, electrical shock may still be a concern. Flipping the switch on a flickering light could lead to electrocution as the power that is surging through the light transfers to your fingers. The shock could range from minor to severe, depending on the cause.

DAMAGE

Electrical issues can begin minor, such as a loose connection in the wall, but then become more severe as the connection causes short circuits and power surges that put stress on connecting wires and circuits in the system. Worsening damage comes with more safety risks and higher repair costs.

Common Causes

For a single flickering light, the cause is likely within the fixture itself, so it may need only replacement or a simple repair. Multiple flickering lights will indicate there is an issue with the electrical system as a whole.

FAULTY CONNECTIONS

Faulty connections from loose wiring are a common cause. The connections may have simply come loose, or the wiring may be aging and no longer up to the task in a modern home. In newer homes built between 2010 and 2013, the cause could be that there is recalled wiring in the home that has faulty insulation. As this wiring fails, surges and other electrical issues can occur.

CIRCUIT ISSUES

The main circuit board in the house controls the flow of electricity to outlets, appliances, and lights. An overloaded circuit board won’t be able to properly handle the power needs of the house, which can lead to fluctuating power and flickering lights. Poorly routed circuit boards can present similar issues.

POWER SURGES

A power surge is when a sudden increase in electrical flow enters the home. The problem can originate from the power service supply, or it could be due to wiring or circuit issues in your home. Lightning storms can also result in power surges.

Repair Options

Fortunately, electrical systems and flickering lights can be repaired. Your electrical service will determine how to move forward depending on the main cause of the issue.

SYSTEM INSPECTION

A home electrical inspection is needed every ten years or at any time lights flicker for no obvious reason. The inspection will begin with checking the fixture itself for issues like damaged plugs or wiring. Then it will move on to checking the state of the circuit board and the main wiring in the home, particularly that which connects to the flickering lights.

COMPONENT REPLACEMENT

Most issues are caused by failing components. Depending on the cause, your electrician may replace the light fixture, wiring leading to the lights, or fuses on the main circuit board. Connections will also be repaired at this time, if necessary.

ELECTRICAL UPGRADES

In some cases, your home simply needs to be upgraded to better support modern electrical needs. For example, adding a whole-house surge protector on the main electrical supply line may remedy power surges from outside the home or due to appliance use in the home.
